In this season of Thanksgiving here’s a show to be thankful for – “Songs of Freedom – a Tribute to Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone,” which will have only one performance Saturday at the Carver Community Cultural Center.
All three of these artists are truly icons of American popular music, and at least two, Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln, were also activists for racial and social justice during the Civil Rights Movement. According to a press release, all three sang about some form of freedom – political freedom (Simone), freedom of love (Mitchell), and the freedom of self-expression (Lincoln). All three are still widely admired by new generations of artists and the public.
Performing the songs of these outstanding female singers/songwriters will be vocalists Theo Bleckmann, Rene Marie and Alicia Olatuja. The show was put together by Grammy Award musician Ulysses Owens, Jr., and first presented under the auspices of Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York City.
The Carver performance is Dec. 2 at 8 p.m., www.thecarver.com or call 210-207-2234.
