TU DANCE AT THE CARVER

by | Oct 27, 2017 | Performing Arts

From the land of ice and snow comes one of the hottest contemporary dance companies in the world – TU Dance, which is based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Since its beginning in 2004, the troupe has won the heart of audiences, praise from critics – including yours truly – and a bunch of awards and “best of” nominations,

The good news for San Antonians is that the Carver Community Cultural Center has brought the company back to town for a single performance this Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. Unfortunately, the evening’s program has not be announced, but the performance is likely to consists of several pieces by different choreographers, including works by co-founder Uri Sands. He and his wife Toni Pierce-Sands, both former Alvin Ailey professional dancers, founded TU Dance to “create access and opportunity – a platform for performers, students and audiences to engage the remarkable art form that shaped our lives.”

Engaged, you will be! Though their overall approach is unmistakably contemporary, the company incorporates elements of classical ballet, modern dance, African styles and urban vernacular movement into its eloquent and very athletic shows. In addition, to Sands, it performs works by other well-known choreographers such as Ron K. Brown, Dwight Rhoden and Katrin Hall. In my review of their first appearance at the Carver I wrote: “Their Friday night performance sizzled with searing intensity, leavened by just enough humor to give the audience a chance to relax a bit.”

Tickets, $30-$40, are available through Ticketmaster and at the Carver Box Office 210-207-2234. The Carver is located at 226 N. Hackberry
